Welcome Back

Early the other morning my handsome man and I  were working hard digging out 30 foot trees to transplant from the farm to the little red house. I pointed out to him that the female hawk (a pair that have raised a clutch every year for the past 6 years) had arrived. The pair, who spend the winters elsewhere, were perched on a power pole just yards away from us. The male had been here for a couple of weeks. I explained to him that most male birds arrive a couple of weeks prior to the females. They spend their days scouting out several nesting sites and sometimes even constructing a nest before the female arrives. He looked at me and said " I wonder why they fly back separately?"

My immediate response could be the only reason explaining this phenomenon.

"The females obviously make the trip alone because they don't like the way the male drives!"

NOTE: a pair of crows had set up house in the hawks previously used nest, but as soon as the lady of the house arrived the crows were immediately sent packing.
